The History of Crossroads
Crossroads School was established in 1966, by a Speech and Language Therapist whose own daughter had learning difficulties. Since there were no existing facilities for children of average intellectual ability but with specific learning problems, she and an Occupational therapist, together with a teacher, answered a need in South African education and established Crossroads as one of the first remedial schools in Johannesburg.
The Crossroads Trust was formed with a Board of Trustees and opened its doors in an old building in Parktown. In 1977 Crossroads School established itself in Victory Park with an enrolment of 80 children.
Crossroads School has grown steadily during its forty-five year history with enrolment presently at 233 students and employing a full time staff of 50 . The physical site has evolved considerably as well. At present the buildings comprise 25 Classrooms, 20 Therapy Rooms, Hall, Library, Computer Room, Sports facilities, a Technology Room and a beautiful Art Studio. The school admits children from all over Johannesburg and is a member of the Independent Schools Association of Southern Africa.
