Diagnostic and Assessment Unit at Crossroads

Diagnostic Testing Process

The Crossroads Assessment Unit makes every effort to make the diagnostic testing process a positive experience. From our warm, friendly testing environment to our comprehensive reports and recommendations, our focus is on helping children and parents identify, understand and work through their unique learning challenges in a way that is comfortable and non threatening.
Our approach is comprehensive and integrated.

THE  FULL  MULTIDISCIPLINARY  ASSESSMENT  CONSISTS  OF:

1.         Psychological Assessment:   (by a Psychologist)
A screening of the intellectual and emotional well being, which includes a full IQ assessment, as well as projective tests.

2.         Speech and Language Assessment:     (by a Speech & Language Therapist)
An assessment of the receptive and expressive language and a screening of hearing.  It covers all aspects of language development.

3.         Occupational Therapy Assessment: (by an Occupational Therapist)
An assessment of the sensory-motor skills which covers gross and fine motor co-ordination, (including handwriting) and visual processing skills.

4.         Scholastic Assessment:    (by a Remedial Therapist)
A screening of formal learning skills – reading, writing, spelling and maths.

THE PROCEDURE:
The assessment procedure takes place over the course of three weeks:
In the first week, the parents meet for an interview with the case manager.  This takes approximately an hour and a full history is taken.  Children do not accompany their parents (or guardians) to the case history appointment.
In the second week, the child is seen by the various therapists over four days  -  our teams consist of a psychologist, an occupational therapist, a speech therapist and a remedial therapist.
Once the assessment process is complete, the assessment team meets to discuss and interpret the findings.
In the third week, the parents meet with our Clinical Director to review the findings, their significance and possible courses of action.

THE REPORT:
A comprehensive and detailed written report is compiled.  Supported by the findings of the assessments, these recommendations form an in-depth action plan which enables you and your child to move forward with confidence.
