“Let none be left behind”
Crossroads School is an independent, remedial school centrally based in Johannesburg. Our school motto “Let None Be Left Behind” epitomises the way we teach and encapsulates our all-encompassing approach to remedial education where we create a Plan for Every Child. Founded in 1966, Crossroads School has established its roots with an in-depth understanding of children faced with learning challenges. Our environment is best suited to children who have the potential to learn but who display current barriers in achieving this ultimate outcome.

Crossroads provides an encouraging and nurturing environment with each learner receiving the individual attention needed to establish and build skills to learn effectively. Learning challenges are caused by various factors and Crossroads School is equipped to understand and support primary school children affected by these. The aim at Crossroads School is to unlock the potential within the child in order to assist them to return to and excel within a mainstream school environment. Not only does the school concentrate on the learner’s academic capabilities but also on social and emotional growth, thereby ensuring that a disciplined and focused child emerges, ready to take on the challenges of mainstream education.
“If a child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn.”
– Ignacio Estrada
Crossroads provides excellence in remedial education, developing the potential of children with learning challenges to succeed in the mainstream environment.
Crossroads School Message
There is a kind of magic created at Crossroads where children are seen and acknowledged for their individual self and abilities. From the day they arrive, they breathe a sigh of relief and while they do that, our educators and support specialists get to work on how they can stimulate and develop this child’s coping skills and strategies so they flourish in education. Coupled with encouragement, we instill in our children our School Values through our Value Tree. Value Myself, Value Others and Value My Community. By doing so we create a holistic environment where our children acquire skills for life whilst making academic gains.
Yolandi Roux – Principal
Our Value Tree
Crossroads School’s Value Tree underpins the education we provide our children. These personal values encompass the foundations upon which Crossroads builds the skills required to overcome individual challenges. They are values that resonate through life.
History & Board of Trustees
Dr. Joyce Fein (née Izikowitz), the visionary founder of Crossroads School, embarked on her educational journey as a speech therapist. Her mission was sparked by recognizing the unmet needs of children with learning difficulties, particularly those with typical intellectual capabilities. Her personal experience as a parent further fueled her determination.
Established in 1966 within a modest Parktown residence, Crossroads School challenged prevailing educational norms. Dr. Fein’s insights gained from working at the Children’s Hospital and Forest Town School guided her. She realized that there were children who required a unique educational approach to support them in accessing their ability to learn and so Crossroads School was born.
Dr. Fein’s commitment to inclusivity led to securing funding for bursaries, ensuring accessibility for all. Generous donations from organizations like the Van Leer Foundation, De Beers, Barlows and individuals fueled the school’s growth.
What set Crossroads School apart was its pioneering multi-disciplinary approach, integrating psychologists, therapists, and educators. Dr. Fein’s quest for innovation took her worldwide, enriching the school’s methods through international research and experience.
Today, Crossroads School excels in remedial education, thanks to Dr. Fein’s unwavering vision. Since 1966, it has nurtured future professionals, upholding the motto, “Let None Be Left Behind.”
Throughout its history, Crossroads School has grown steadily, with a capacity for 252 learners and employing over 45 full-time staff members. The school’s leadership consistently explores improvements and enhancements to its facilities, staying current with educational trends.
Crossroads School admits children from all across Johannesburg, holding registered Non-Profit Organization status with Public Benefit Organization recognition. It is also a proud member of the Independent Schools Association of Southern Africa and is OISESA and UMALUSI Accredited.
